Enamelled Faience.
Made out of Chinese bronze during the 19th century, from the Cernuschi collection in Paris, this vase with a blue and purple glaze is a rare example of work following the sinisant trend by the Haviland manufacturing company. Symbol of eclecticism of decorative arts from the second half of the 19th century, this item is a true Far East aesthetic work of art.
Asia's opening to the western markets, as well as the creation of well known collections such as those at the Chinese museum of empress Eugénie in Fontainebleu or those gathered by Henri Cernuschi between 1871 and 1873 during his travels, in fact influenced the decorative arts of this period which adopted an attractive Far East style. On the paunch of this vase, a branch of a peach tree, which shoots up the body of the vase, delicately frames a Chinese character, the Shou, these two symbols being associated with longevity. Flying bats are also featured on the paunch of the vase.
At the Universal Exhibition of 1878, Théodore Deck presented a very similar vase, copied from the Chinese bronze one in the Cernuschi collection, but with an aubergine coloured glaze, thus adopting Deck's own style. After this, Deck made several editions of this vase.
