This glazed stoneware sculpture was executed by Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat is an extremely important ceramist, notably due to his mastery of the flamed stoneware technique. He founded his own faience workshop in Bourg-la-Reine and participated in various exhibitions, where his pieces achieved considerable success.
The statuette represents a woman walking in the wind; her shoulders covered with a cape, she keeps her hands tucked into a muff for warmth. The suppleness of the modeling of the skirt, as if lifted by a strong wind, demonstrates the artist’s virtuosity. Similarly, the mastery of the glazed stoneware technique is evident in the color and sheen effects of the material. While blue dominates, it is nuanced with deep “oxblood” red, which contributed to the artist’s fame, and green.
The work is signed and numbered under the base.
