This earthenware vase was created by Émile Gallé between 1885 and 1889.
Considered the founding father of Art Nouveau, Émile Gallé took over the factory founded by his father and gave it significant impetus, which he supported throughout his life with ever-renewed creativity.
This large vase with its eggplant glaze is adorned with hollows alternating white with green vegetal motifs and green with white decorations, both highlighted with gold. The motifs on the neck, alternating with a certain regularity, echo this design. Inside, the glaze features various shades of green also present in the external decorations. Thus, the rich overall composition presents a beautiful homogeneity.
The signature under the base of the work indicates that it was made in the second half of the 1880s by the artist, during a period when Gallé was influenced by East Asian art, which likely inspired the eggplant color of the vase’s glaze.
