This glazed porcelain jardiniere was created by the porcelain painter G. Delfosse around 1930.
The ornamentation of the piece draws inspiration from the decorative vocabulary of Ancient Egyptian art in its choice of motifs. The use of a restrained polychrome combined with gold lends it a distinctive sense of refinement.
The shape of the jardiniere resembles a flat-bottomed boat, with a raised prow and stern that take the form of gilded falcon heads. The falcons’ wings unfold along the body of the piece, both on the exterior and interior surfaces. The base is adorned with intertwined lotus flowers, interspersed with cobras – tutelary animals of Lower Egypt and quintessential symbols of pharaonic power.
The aesthetic and decorative language of this piece reflects the enduring popularity of Ancient Egyptian art at the beginning of the 20th century.
