Style Neo-gothic / Ref.1545

Neo-Gothic Paneled Room from Marcq en Baroeul

Dimensions:

Height: 140'' ½  357cm

Origin:
19th century, Marcq en Baroeul

Status:
Excellent condition

The Neo-Gothic paneled room we are presenting here is exceptional. It is covered in low relief carving. The main door is a double door. Its rectangular overdoor bears a typical Gothic feature: a fantasy dragon-like creature. A curved transom crowns the whole composition. The doors themselves are covered with carvings. The secondary door is also crowned by an overdoor and a transom, carved with foliage and faces. Nude female busts resting on volutes of foliage flank both the overdoors. The decoration of the doors is very diverse going from a hunting scene to the face of a lady in a medallion. The wealth of details and the quality of the sculpture clearly indicate how refined the workmanship needed to be. The most extraordinary piece in this room is the Neo-Gothic credenza with its display of arches and pinnacles, in a "Cathedral style", which is a very architectural style, similar to Gothic cathedral architecture. The rich decoration of the wainscot is very rare. Adorned below with plain molded panels, above they are garnished with lush sculptures of curlicue foliage and profiles of men and women in medallions; an elaborate frieze of foliage runs along the top and each panel is separated by a pilaster upon which sits a bust. The fact that these busts are all different speaks to the originality and freedom the artist had. An extremely rare room of exceptional quality that deserves to be relocated in the most extraordinary of homes.

The magnificient mantel from this room is presented as item #1546. The original room was 34,45 feet long by 17,72 feet wide. There are 43,37 feet of wainscot paneling in addition to the mantel and the elements figured with their dimensions in photo #18.
