Originating from the sumptuous Villa Salviati in Tuscany, this mantel top was created when the couple Arthur Vansittart and Diana Crosbie refurbished part of the villa's interior décor between 1844 and 1854.
The villa, an important 15th-century Italian Renaissance work, was rented by the Vansittarts in 1836 before being purchased in 1844 with all its contents. They finally sold the villa in 1854, after moving many of the paintings and much of the furniture to Foots Cray Place in Kent. Our mantelpiece therefore dates from the period of occupation of the villa once purchased, between 1844 and 1854. It may be part of a redesign of some of the villa's interiors. An album of photographic views of the Villa Salviati dating from 1900-1920 shows our mantelpiece still in place in one of the rooms.
