This antique fireback wooden model was made out of carved wood in the 18th century, it is dated 1710, which situates it at the time of Louis XIV's reign.
It celebrates the fifteen years of the marriage celebrated in 1695 at Ourches sur Meuse, of Nicolas de Massenbach (25 July 1659-1722, son of Philippe-Adam de Massenbach and Claude-Henriette d'Auxy) and Françoise d'Helmstadt (? -1729, daughter of Jean Frédéric d'Helmstadt and Gabrielle-Joséphine d'Aucy).
The initials of the two spouses and the anniversary date appear on the ribbon on top of the composition, where one reads "NDM 1710 FDH". On the left is the shield of Massenbach, of azure with two or fasces, and on the right that of Helmstadt, of silver with a crow of sand. This coat of arms is surmounted by a crown of marquis and supported by lions lampasses.
The whole sculpture on this ancient object, including a frieze of vegetable motifs on the periphery of the plate, is of a beautiful quality.
This fireback wooden model is published in the book by Philipe Palasi, "Plaques de cheminées héraldiques", p. 56.
