Good condition.
This fireback was made of cast iron during the 18th century.
It is adorned with the Pilllars of Hercules, name given in the Roman antiquity to the mountains which bordered the Strait of Gibraltar and which symbolized the frontier between the civilized world and an unknown or dangerous world. The Pillars received their name from one of the twelve works of Hercules, during which he had to recover the oxen of Geryon, a triple-body monster, in order to bring them back to Eurystheus, who offered them to Hera in sacrifice.
