Antique cast iron fireback made in the 19th century, with the mythological iconography of Jupiter and Semele.
Semele, daughter of Cadmus and Harmony, was beloved of Jupiter, who made her the mother of Bacchus. Juno, jealous of Semele, introduced herself to her in the form of his nurse Beroe, advising Semele to ask Jupiter to show himself to her in all his glory. The god, in spite of himself, heard the prayer of his lover, but scarcely had he appeared that the palace burnt. Semele perished in the flames. However, Bacchus, whom she still carried inside her, was saved by Jupiter.
A same model fireback is illustrated in the book by Henri Carpentier, ""Les plaques de cheminée"".
