This small squared Louis XV style fireback was made in the 19th century.
In a Rococo decoration where are represented stylized shells, acanthus leaves scrolls and flowers, is depicting the "Leda and the Swan" scene.
Zeus transformed into a swan, was followed by Venus changed into an eagle, he threw himself in Leda's arms while she was near the Eurotas river. After nine months she gave birth to two eggs, from the first Helen and Polydeuces were born, considered as Zeus's children, from the other, Castor and Clytemnestra were born, considered as children of Tyndareus, Leda's husband.
A similar model is kept in the Orleans Museum, and illustrated in Henri carpentier's book "Firebacks".
