This fireback was made in the 20th century and bears the Jansenist coat of arms representing the three Theological Virtues. Faith is represented as a blindfolded woman, Hope is represented by an anchor and Charity by a burning heart. A Latin inscription runs all along this medallion: "Ardet Amans Spe Nixa Fides" which means "Faith, leaning on Hope, burns with the fire of Charity". This sentence appeared in the frontispiece of all Jansenist works. The medallion is surrounded on both sides by the Cardinal Virtues: Strength, Justice, Temperance and Prudence.
Jansenism is a religious movement that developed mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries in France and is based exclusively on the doctrine of Saint Augustine. The name of this current comes from the bishop of Ypres, Cornelius Jansen, who wrote the founding text of the movement. In Paris, the Mecca of Jansenism was the abbey of Port-Royal. Another fireback of the same model is known in the Abbey of Orval, in the south of Belgium.
