Style Louis XIV / Ref.11280

Beautiful fireback with French coat of arms and military symbols

Dimensions
Width 22'' ½  57cm
Height 22'' ⅞  58cm

Origin:
20th century, France

This Louis XIV style cast iron fireback made at the beginning of the 20th century is a moulding from an existing mold from the 18th century. It represents the arms of France in the centre, framed by the collar of the Order of Saint Michael. Two eagles hold the medallion, surrounded by military symbols such as flags. The crown of the coronation of the kings of France is placed above. A motto tops it all : ""Seul contre tous"" (Alone against all). Louis XIV adapted this motto during the European Coalition against him in the years 1670 to 1700, especially with the war against Holland and the War of the Great Alliance. Examples of this fireback are dated 1670 and 1680.

See the work of Henri Carpentier, ""Plaques de cheminées"", Tome premier, p.202, for a similar model.
