This Neo-Renaissance style fireback plate was made during the 20th century. It is decorated with King Francis I's Salamander, a well-known symbol of the sovereign, engraved in stone at the Chateau de Chambord and the Chateau de Fontainebleau. According to legends, the Salamander hibernates in the stumps and wakes up when they are burned, hence its presence on this fireback .
