Model of the Eiffel tower
Dimensions
Width 50'' ⅜ 128cm
Height 118'' ⅛ 300cm
Origin:
1887
Status:
The model can be restored.
This model was made circa 1887 as a project for the 300 meter tall tower.
It matches an engraving from 1887, except for the top part of the tower. There are visible differences between this model and the tower that was built in 1889 for the World's fair, in the 1rst and 2nd floor buildings and in the decorations. The model is 1/100th of the size of the Eiffel Tower. The materials used are iron and zinc and a few parts in zamac. Zamac is an alloy of zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper. The original polychromy is partially preserved.
To our knowledge this is the only existing model of this size and period.
For the engraving referred to : see reference n°110 : 300 meter tall tower, elevation included in the convention of the January 8th, 1887, Musée d'Orsay, Eiffel bequest.
