Dimensions:
Width: 15''   38cm
Height: 25'' ⅝  65cm
Depth: 15''   38cm

Origin:
Circa 1880, France. Signed 'P. Serres'

Status:
In very good condition. Beautiful old patina.

This beautiful bronze sculpture with a brown patina was cast after a model by Provin Serres (born in 1840), pupil of the great Mathurin Moreau. It represents Neptune armed with its trident, taming the waves where a foaming sea horse rears. The expression of the face and the sophisticated pose allow to admire this work from all sides. It is presented on a rotating pedestal in Rosso Antico marble mounted in gilt bronze . The chiselling of the Louis XV style volutes and palmettes in gilt bronze was carefully executed.
This work by Provin Serres takes its inspiration from the important Bernini sculpture preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and in the sculpture by Lambert-Sigisbert Adam of the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Provin Serres is a close pupil to Mathurin Moreau, exhibiting from 1879 to 1902 at the Salon, and became Societor of the French Artists in 1893.
