Antique style statue of Flora from 1840

Dimensions
Width 15''   38cm
Height 41'' ⅜  105cm

Origin:
19th century

Status:
Excellent condition

This Antique style statue is a semi-statuary marble copy of a Roman statue, most likely of the goddess Flora.
Draped in a finely pleated toga that inhances her silhouette, with a crown of roses holding back her wavy hair, the goddess stands straight with a bouquet of flowers in her hand.

This statue is a copy of an Antique marble sculpture in the Museum of the Capitole in Rome. The flowers the goddess is holding are said to have been added in the 18th century. This statue was discovered in Hadrian’s Villa Tiburtina in Rome. Some commentators prefer to see this figure as a representation of Polhymnia, the Muse of sacred poetry, or of Proserpina the daughter of Ceres and Jupiter.
