This pair of thistle vases was made by the Baccarat crystal factory around 1890.
Founded under Louis XV, the French crystal factory Baccarat demonstrated its excellence at Universal Exhibitions throughout the 19th century.
These vases were made of blown clear crystal printed with leaf motifs; for the decoration, it was lined with amethyst crystal adorned with a black and gold champlevé enameled decoration.
Two thistle flowers wrapping around the body of the vases, respond to each other in axial symmetry.
The two vases rest on a gilded bronze base, under the base of which is the brand stamp.
Baccarat's nepenthe vase, kept in a private collection, was made using the same techniques.
The crystal has an identical surface treatment. It presents a decoration of nepenthes.
Like thistles, this plant is rendered in a very naturalistic manner.
This vase was presented at the International Exhibition of Eastern France in 1909.
