The base of this clock, supported by four legs, has an uneven bronze edge, underlined by a bronze belt, which is woven like a braid of ribbons and patched with flowers. In a more Rococo design, the skirting displays an upside down shell, set in a garland of flowers. Above, a black marble layer, inlaid with red marble, is adorned with bronze flowers.
The shell of the snail, in gilded bronze, holds the clock mechanism. The chiseling of its surface is of a rare quality, the coils are beautifully rendered.
Roman numbers on small round white enameled medallions are set in circle on the shell around the hands.
The silver bronze of the gastropod’s body contrasts with the gilded bronze, as does the silver skin of the Putto dressed in gilded bronze clothes, sitting on its back. The Putto wears a gilded bronze straw hat and carries a staff in his left hand. Grape vines and bunches of wheat cover the clock, adding to the country theme.
The alternating patinas of the bronze are a characteristic trait of this exceptional piece, adding to the quality of sculpture and chiseling. The shape and subject of the clock is a rare and original example of the creativity of the Napoleon III period.
