This unique antique clock is surmounted with a statue made out of Carrara statuary marble. Two naked lovers are represented. Their arms meeting together in the air and holding a flower garland. The square base features the clock and some beautiful ornaments made out of gilded bronze.
Born in Paris in 1847, Emile Leysalle has a natural talent for design and three-dimensional representation. He became a sculptor and is a graduate from the Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was the pupil of Mathurin Moreau and then Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. With Carpeaux, Leysalle collaborated in making sculptures for the Palais Garnier (opera house in Paris), the frontispiece for the Gare du Nord (station in Paris) and the fountain of the observatory in Luxembourg gardens. At the age of 20, Emile Leysalle received a gold medal for the large bowl he presented at the World's Fair of 1867 in Paris. During the 1880s Emile Leysalle was a sculpting teacher in Geneva in Switzerland. He presented a statue made out of terra cotta, known as the 'Golden Age' at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Geneva in 1886.
