Dimensions
Width 9''   23cm
Height 17'' ¾  45cm

Origin:
Around 1890.

Enamelled faience, gilded bronze.
Made up of a clock and two candelabras, this mantel clock was made out of green enamelled faience and gilded bronze around 1890. The ceramic work is characteristic of the Choisy-le-Roi manufacturing company especially in terms of the colour of the enamel. The faience is elaborately decorated, particularly in its openwork sections. The theme of the Foo Dog is all over this mantel clock, confirming the item's Far East inspiration. Foo Dogs decorate the lower part of this clock and are also found on the candelabras, holding the bronze arms in their jaws. The gilded bronze ornaments have been delicately made and add to the elaborate detail of this ensemble.

Founded in 1805 by Mr Valentin, Melchoir and Nicholas Paillart in the old former castle of Choisy-le-roi, in the Paris region, the company was then owned by Hippolyte Boulenger in 1863. Thanks to his charisma and his entrepreneurial nature, he became well known in the faience industry. Production diversified and small decorative objects started to be made. This mantel clock is completely characteristic of this new type of production, which perpetuated after the death of Hippolyte Boulenger in 1892, when the company was taken over by his son, Paul.
