Two soldiers with banners surround the king. The one on the right has a fawn by his side.

History:
Charles Martel (690-741) was King of the Franks when the lineage of the Merovingian turns into the Carolingian. He is also the paternal grandfather of Charlemagne. Known for being a brave warrior, he is very popular in the 19th Century because he appears to be the ideal warrior king, taking arms to defend his country.

Implementation report:
This representation of Charles Martel was probably inspired by the 1835 command of Louis Philippe for the Sculpture Gallery, in the Castle of Versailles, which represented all the great men of France through the ages. For this statue he choose the Belgian-born sculptor Jean Baptiste Joseph De Bay father (1779-1863). This artist was the autor of several sculptures of famous people, including the Palais de la Bourse in Nantes or its famous 'Pericles distributing crowns' in the Tuileries Gardens, facing the Louvre.
