Diameter: 15'' ¾  40cm

Origin:
19th century

Good condition

This ovoid vase is a unique piece in the production of Ernest Chaplet, one of the most talented ceramists of the 19th century.

Fruit of the collaboration between Ernest Chaplet and the Haviland earthenware factory. Our vase bears the signature of the ceramist Ringel d’Illzach.

Its original decoration represents a lottery and urban party scene, developing on the body like a real painting.

In this lively setting, the atmosphere is one of popular festivities, against a backdrop of factory chimneys. The raffle game is symbolized by a lottery wheel, also called lucky.

In the crowd, the presence of a soldier evokes the atmosphere of the years 1870-1871. Perhaps it is a raffle for the benefit of the French military, Paris having suffered a siege then the Commune event.

Other characters attend the preparations for circus acts (the dancer, the strong man). The theme was illustrated, at the same time, by Eugène Grasset, Toulouse-Lautrec and Georges Seurat.

With a matte and mineral appearance, this vase is treated with turquoise slip, in relief and engraved, enhanced with gilding. Its execution is precise, fine and daring.

The Galerie Marc Maison also presents on its site a stoneware dish from 1884, signed by Chaplet and Ringel d’Illzach. This piece was acquired by the prestigious Musée d’Orsay in 2022.
