This Harlequin lamp was executed by Émile Carlier in the second half of the 19th century.
Émile Joseph François Carlier (1827-1880) studied sculpture under Jean-Jacques Feuchère and exhibited at the Salon between 1859 and 1879.
This lamp features a glass globe supported by vegetation taking the form of a horn. It is carried on its shoulder by a harlequin, concealing the bat with which he is accustomed to distributing blows behind his back. He appears to be walking, with a cat rubbing against his legs. Harlequin is the comedic servant of the commedia dell’arte, both gluttonous and lazy.
Harlequin is not the only character from the commedia dell’arte who inspired Carlier. Indeed, he presented a marble representing Pierrot at the Salon of 1876, known through a bronze. He too is depicted in his traditional costume.
