This beautiful pair of Japanese style table lamps (see Japonism ) was made around 1880. The bodies are made of Stazuma faience, a crackled faience used in Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan, in the 1800’s. The decoration of these pieces is absolutely incredible, with peacocks placed in a floral landscape and small cartouches showing various scenes, like that of a monk fighting a dragon. The decoration is extremely precious and detailed, in slight relief. These vases exported to France were then made into lamps by adding a beautiful gilt-bronze frame typical of the late-19th century taste for exoticism in the West. Satzuma faience has existed since the beginning of the 17th century. It was known in Europe since the great World's Fair of 1867 in Paris and was then widely imported for a clientele of connoisseurs.
