This Moorish-inspired lantern was executed in the second half of the 19th century.
Its structure is composed of three parts. The pendant, at the bottom, features oriental ornamentation. The body of the lantern rests on a semi-circular part adorned with various echoing motifs. The central part, pyramidal, has three levels: the first one has large openings imitating the windows of Moorish architecture, particularly with the juxtaposition and superimposition of the horseshoe arches, the inner part of which recalls the intersecting arches of the Alhambra. This motif was also used in Moorish-inspired architecture, as evidenced by the windows of Villa Gaïla in Saint-Raphaël in France. The second level, smaller, repeats the same motifs in a simplified form. Finally, the pyramidal crown is adorned with graceful vegetal ornaments. The central body of the lantern is connected to the upper part, intended to be suspended from the ceiling, by three chains.
This lantern bears witness to the importance of Orientalism in the 19th century. Its ornamentation, as well as its shape, are evidence of the artists’ interest in the art of South and Eastern countries.
