Style Napoleon III / Ref.11189

Suite of Four Napoleon III Period Sconces With Bronze Panther Heads, second half of the 19th century

Dimensions
Width 11''   28cm
Height 17'' ⅜  44cm
Depth: 15'' ¾  40cm

Origin:
France, 19th century

This set of four bronze wall sconces, surmounted by crystal globes, was crafted in the second half of the 19th century.

The sconces are attached to the wall via a finely chiseled panther head adorned with a collar featuring a frieze of Greek key patterns. The panther, rendered with remarkable detail and a fierce expression, holds a ring in its jaws. The ring, embellished with bands, acanthus leaves, volutes, and rosettes, serves as the support for the console that holds the globe. At the lower section, a pointed element connects to a circle decorated with Greek key friezes, nestled within the ring. At the upper section, a key mechanism allowed for the regulation of gas or oil feeding the flame. Above this mechanism is a decorative promontory adorned with palmettes, followed by a circular platform decorated with acanthus leaves. The ensemble is crowned with a Baccarat crystal globe.

During the 19th century, the craze for Egyptomania strongly influenced the decorative arts, as exemplified by these sconces, which blend Egyptian-inspired elements with classical motifs.

An earlier restoration has been made to one of the globes.
The sconces have been electrified.
