Style Louis XIV / Ref.5861

Exceptional Louis XIV period mantel from a mansion in Rouge Royal marble.

Dimensions
Width 89''   226cm
Height 53'' ⅛  135cm
Depth: 5'' ½  14cm

This antique Louis XIV period mantel was carved in Rouge Royal marble, also known as ‘Rouge Louis XIV’ because the king was particularly fond of this marble. The block which was used to create this mantel has long white calcite flames that add elegance to the piece. The Rouge Royal marble quarry is located in Hautmont, Belgium. This is how the French economist Jérôme Adolphe Blanqui described this magnificent marble in his Dictionnaire du commerce et de l'industrie: “This marble with a red background, mixed with white, and sometimes blue, is extracted in the town of Franchimont, near Philippeville, in the province of Namur. In all the Belgium marbles it is the one that was most frequently used in the decoration of monuments : in the palace of Versailles, the Louvre, Palais Royal, and in many other public and private buildings. In the village of Franchimont  there is a quarry of this marble, it is sufficed to cover the whole consumption, and does not seem emptied. This marble is easy to extract, since it can be divided into blocks and not into panels".

Our mantel is adorned with a Bolection moulding typical of the Louis XIV period. This large mantel, 134.5 centimetres high and over 2 metres wide, was made for a private mansion in Paris or Versailles. The Château is home to several similar pieces, such as this Louis XIV mantel in green Campan marble with Bolection moulding in the Salon de la Paix.

The resemblance is even more uncanny with this mantel surmounted by an acroterion and adorned with a white marble bas-relief depicting The Flight into Egypt by Gerard Van Opstal in the Salon de Diane. In fact, this mantel also had an acroterion, as can be seen from the hanging points at the back of the shelf.
