This painting was probably executed by the Austrian painter Heinrich von Angeli in the second half of the 19th century. Born in present-day Hungary, Heinrich von Angeli (1840-1925) studied at the Imperial and Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was a student of P. J. R. Geiger, and later in Düsseldorf, under the history and portrait painter Emanuel Leutze. He stayed in Munich for three years, frequenting the studio of Karl von Piloty while working independently. Initially celebrated for his portraits of European royal courts, Heinrich von Angeli was also a distinguished history painter, known for works such as Antony and Cleopatra1. He is also credited with a scene depicting Mark Antony before Caesar’s body, according to the Biographisches Lexikon des Kaiserthums Österreich by Constant von Wurzbach and the Österreichische Wochenschrift für Wissenschaft, Kunst und öffentliches Leben.
