This richly sculpted Napoleon III fire screen was crafted in the 19th century.
It rests on an architecturally designed base, above which unfolds a wild landscape populated by felines. At the center, a lion emerges from a cave, surrounded by reeds that partially obscure a rocky ground. On either side, two lionesses are engaged in combat with serpents on elevated rocks. The first seems to have defeated her adversary, pinning its neck under her right paw, while the second is in the midst of action, with the serpent attempting to strike at her throat. In the background, two palm trees balance the composition; their large leaves conceal hooks designed to hold a fire poker or shovel. The central part of the fire screen is movable and can be raised or lowered using levers shaped like reeds, perfectly integrated into the ornamentation, depending on the user’s needs. When raised, it takes the form of a light, intricately designed fan.
The mechanism allowing the fan to be raised, using the right lever, or lowered, using the left lever, was patented.
