Origin:
France, 20th century
This vase was crafted by ceramist Léon Elchinger in the early 20th century, based on a model by sculptor Jean-Désiré Ringel d’Illzach.
Alsatian sculptor Jean-Désiré Ringel d’Illzach specialized in portraits, as reflected in this vase.
Originating from Soufflenheim, an Alsatian village with a strong pottery tradition, Léon Elchinger brought a breath of modernity to Alsatian ceramics while remaining rooted in this centuries-old tradition.
This vase bears only the signature “Soufflenheim” along with the number 904. Its rather traditional shape features a very modern design. Four highly expressive female faces adorn the body of the vase. Two, back to back, are laughing, while the other two are screaming. The women's hair and bodies blend into the body of the object.
Elchinger learned the technique of flamed and iridescent ceramics during a stay at the Zsolnay factory in 1897, and he made it his specialty. Here, the artist's technical mastery is evident in the metallic and colorful reflections of the material.
This vase was produced in several copies, each with different glazes. The one in the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art distinguishes the faces from the hair in a more realistic way.
