This patinated bronze statuette depicting a basketball player in action was created by Elie Mardini around 1930.
The sculptor Elie Mardini, of Italian origin, lived in France during the Art Deco period, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s.
The basketball player is depicted from the back, having just thrown the ball towards the basket, his body arched in a highly skilled move known as the “reverse dunk” in basketball. The mastery of body representation is particularly noticeable in the depiction of the athlete’s balance, standing on the tip of one foot to express his momentum (the player is usually mid-leap), and in the details of the musculature. The athlete turns his head to gauge the trajectory of his shot. The ball remains suspended, on the edge of the basket, but its centered position leaves no doubt about the success of the throw.
Mardini particularly distinguished himself in sports representations. Besides this statuette of a basketball player, which has several editions, he also created a sculpture titled The Triumph, depicting an almost nude athlete brandishing the palm of victory, and produced numerous small statuettes on various sports subjects, including The Fencers.
