This exceptional antique mantel adopts the language of the Gothic Revival style. Carved in wood, it offers a rare quality of sculpture and an exceptional wealth of motifs. Three levels of sculpture adorn the powerful jambs. Below are high relief garlands of fruits, placed in molded rectangular frame. In the middle, male figures dressed in medieval slashed doublets are set against a parchment and carved in the round. The parchment is part of the Renaissance ornamental vocabulary. These characters are reminiscent of those found on misericords or "mercy seats", a small, often elaborately carved shelf under the folding seats, which you could rest upon during long standing prayers in Medieval churches. These figures are crowned by a shell motif, which itself is topped by a grotesque in the form a bearded man's face. The sculpture on the front of the entablature depicts a very interesting scene: two fanciful scrolled winged animals, flank a smiling face emerging from a rolled parchment. Such two-legged animals were very popular in the Middle Ages, and were often painted in the margins of manuscripts, on painted wood paneling, on ceilings and secular objects. Its use here in a Neo-Gothic design is unusual. Above, a cornice carved with a mask and foliage equally refers to the Medieval period. A row of finials completes the composition of the mantel, while the hood is speckled with fleur de lys.

This mantel is part of the paneled room item #1545 and cannot be sold alone.
