Monumental wood chimneypiece with Four Seasons trumeau on stone mantel in the Napoleon III style from the 19th century. The mantel rests on jambs in the shape of Ionic columns, their capitals of paired scrolling volutes upon a molded cap (echinus) enriched with egg-and-dart, their bases composed of a large torus beneath a sculpted frieze of modillions and quatrefoils. The entablature is adorned with a high relief knotted rope, while a frieze of alternating quatrefoil flower shapes and palmettes runs along its cornice. The mantel protrudes against side panels that echo and give majesty to this chimneypiece. The mantel rises up to a carved oak hooded overmantel that follows the same protruding structure. Its base is adorned with four cartouche shaped panels representing the Four Seasons flanked with five tapered ionique columns crowned with lion heads. The hood covered with a shingle design carries a large decorative clasp with circular center frame bearing a bee in a cartouche. The countless, organized, hardworking bee , symbol of the First and Second Empire is also the symbol of life and of the resurrection and is perfectly in tone with the Four Seasons theme. The rich ornamentation of the mantel is a perfect reflection of the Napoleon III eclectic and creative style.
