This antique Louis XV style period mantel has the rare quality of being carved in Corton stone. Corton stone is a yellow or pink stone from the Burgundy region. The design of this mantel seems to hesitate between the slightly curved lines of the Regence style and the asymmetry of the Louis XV style. Of rectangular base, it has slightly rounded canted jambs. These jambs are adorned with a décor of molded panels and lush foliage. The profile of the entablature is quite complex, creating a wavy movement. A fine molding underlines the front, which is adorned with molded panels. The centerpiece of the entablature is typical of the Louis XV style with its use of a medallion of foliage slightly slanted. The lightly protruding shelf follows the curved lines of the entablature, completing the composition.
