This exceptional mantel from Italy dates from the early 17th century. Renaissance in style, this piece is fascinating by its large size and quality of sculpture.
The jambs with lion claw feet support sheaths that rise up into anthropomorphic modillions: two all’antica female busts resting on lion face mascarons support the entablature. The frieze of the entablature is entirely covered with very high relief sculpture representing war trophies and musical instruments. A central cartouche presents a beautiful coat of arms. An imposing molded cornice with dentils completes the composition.
The stone in which this piece is so artfully carved is called Pietra Serena, “Grès de Florence” in France and is found near Florence in Tuscany. Florentine style of architecture and sculpture is marked by the use of this stone.

Our research leads us to believe that the coat of arms belongs to the Anguissola Scotti family, from Piacenza in Emilia-Romagna, north of Tuscany. This could explain the use of the stone and the similarity with the Florentine Renaissance style.

The mantel piece was coated with five layers of paint, which were carefully removed by specialists A restoration date of 1883 was revealed when we salvaged the piece. This date matches the dates when major restorations were made in its castle of origin. Chips and missing pieces were filled with imitation sandstone stucco, which explains the pink coloring of these restorations. Our work on this piece was limited to the curved molding of the cornice on the headband where some chips were restored using bits taken from the back of the jambs. The plinths, the back of the jambs and finish on the back of the cornice, left and right, were restored on our request. These restorations can easily be removed.
