This mantel is the most complex example of a modillion model. The oak leaf shaped modillions rest on small blocks called culot carved with the same leaf motif. The jambs, entablature and end blocks are adorned with mouldings that form panels. This model was produced for relatively opulent interiors and called for higher quality marbles.
Here the marble used is Saint Béat grey from quarries of that name in the Pyrenees. The craftsmanship is particularly beautiful; the relative symmetry of the veins in the jambs shows the marble mason focused more on artistic effect than economy as he carved the block of stone.
