This mantelpiece adorned with Egyptian-inspired decorations was crafted in three types of marble circa 1830. The bases and capitals of the jambs, as well as the mantel, are made of Portor marble, while the jambs and lintel are carved from Carrara Statuary marble, enhanced with low-relief applications in Yellow Valencia marble. The jambs, lintel, and mantel feature clean, straight lines. The rectangular jambs are decorated in the center with a motif combining elements of the scarab – a sacred animal linked by the Egyptians to the sun and the earth – and the winged solar disk, a symbol of divinity, royalty, and power in ancient Egypt. On either side, two women lie prone. Their sensuous attire evokes aspects of ancient Egyptian dress, and they wear vulture crowns, which were traditionally worn by great royal wives and female pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Each holds a duck in her hands. This motif is inspired by a makeup spoon shaped like a swimmer holding a duck before her, dating to the reign of Amenhotep III (1390-1352 BCE) and housed in the Louvre Museum (E 218).
