This Louis XVI style fireplace is carved in statuary marble, an all-white marble from the Carrares quarries in the Apuan Alps. The band is adorned with numerous plant motifs carved in great detail, with reliefs that vary throughout. It is symmetrical, organized around a central motif like a bouquet of acanthus leaves and flowers. The main acanthus leaf motif runs the length of the band in scrolls, ending in sinuous lines of ivy leaves. The console part of the leg is decorated with a floral motif of acanthus leaves curling around themselves and a central bud. The rest of the leg is carved to represent an Ionic column, recognized by its scrolled capital and molded base, in this case decorated with acanthus leaves. The flutes of the column are filled with field grasses, a recurring motif in the Louis XVI style, which blends motifs from nature and Greek antiquity.
This fireplace is sold with its original cast iron insert and with its marble floor.
