With slightly curved legs, this Louis XVI style fireplace mantel has a touch of what is known in France as 'Transition style'.The oval and square rosettes are in bronze. The fluting on the 2 legs are inlaid with bronze. All are original decorations. The fireplace is in semi-statuary Carrare marble. The cast-iron insert is included.

The 'transition' style in France emerged between 1758 and 1775. This style was breaking away from the Louis XV style and was creating the Louis XVI style. In its time, it was refered to as the 'Greek taste' and shows the idea people had of ancient greek and latin esthetics. Of neoclassical inspiration, it favors simplicity, straight lines, strict balance of proportions and symetry. It is influenced by Italy, but also China and the Ottoman Empire. It was through the discovery of the ruins of Herculanum in 1738 and Pompey in 1748 that the elite developped this passion for ancient cultures.
