The color of this marble is called Brèche d'Alep and suits perfectly a French Provençal house or style of decoration. The fluting and the floral ornaments are typical of the Louis XVI period. There are openings on the sides for the heat to spread across the room.
The original Brèche d'Alep marble comes from Syria. In the 17th century, marbles of similar quality were discovered in the South of France and were given the same name. Appreciated for its beauty, this marble was very fashionable all through the 18th Century, until the French Revolution. It was used for chimneys and furniture in such noble settings as the castle of Fontainebleau and the palace of Versailles.
