Cast iron fireback with lions
Dimensions:
Width: 36'' ¼ 92cm
Height: 43'' ¾ 111cm
Depth: 2'' 5cm
Origin:
17th century
17th century fireback figuring a shield “argent 5 fusils accollé fess, touching the side of the shield” supported by two roaring lions. This coat of arms belonged to the de Hamal and Hamal de Biralmont families.
The fortified castle of Séraing-le-Château in Belgium, which belonged to the Hamal family until 1862 when Louis-Joseph count of Hamal sold it to the Laminne family, is still standing. Some of the walls are decorated with the coat of arms of the de Hamal, which were added when the castle was revamped by Demany an architect from Liège, Beligium in the 19th century.
Apparently the de Hamal family owned a number of estates in Belgium. Le Mesnil and Treignes, towns of which they were Barons (from 1657 to 1789), still bear the traces of their arms. < br />
In the 18th century, the Baillet-Hamal family owned the castle and the forges know as “de la Trapperie” in Habbay-la-Vieille.
