Cast iron fireback with crowned lion shield supported by lions

Beautiful cast iron fireback made in the early 20th century. The arched top follows the design and frames a the coat of arms and motto. The arms display a lion rampant holding a sword with a clover hilt. On either side of the of the shield appear two lion heads, their bodies behind, their shoulders supporting the shield. The crown above is that of an earl; below, a cross of the order of the Legion of Honor hangs from the arms. The motto inscribed is “PRO FIDE ET REGE”.
This coat of arms belongs to the Bourcier de Monthureux (or Montureux) family. The Bourcier d’Autrey family took the name de Monthureux when the town of Monthureux sur Saone became a earldom in 1736. Later, Jean-Louis Bourcier de Monthureux was a diplomat who was in charge of transferring the dukedom of Lorraine and Bar to Stanislas Leszczynski, former king of Poland in 1737, which explains the presence of the 18th century motto of Poland “PRO FIDE ET REGE” (For faith and King). The cross of the Order of the Legion of Honor gives the best indication of the commissioner of this fireback. Indeed, Arthur Bourcier de Montureux received this honor in 1923.
