Good condition.

Made by Gentil & Bourdet in the early 20th century, this fireplace has a blue-grey stoneware decoration surrounded by white painted wood. The stoneware decoration framing the firebox features large Egyptian scarabs in high-relief combined with large acanthus leaves folded on top. In the centre of the overmantel, resting on the mantel shelf, is a large domed central finial. This is encircled by fine blue-grey stoneware elements. On either side of the finial, bands with interlaced rope motifs decorate the entire base of the hood. The pyramid-shaped hood is decorated on three sides with juxtaposed stoneware tiles, giving the sides a plain character. The Egyptian scarab decoration and the pyramid-shaped hood are echoes of artistic motifs from ancient Egypt, which were very popular at the time with the numerous archaeological excavations. The top of the hood is separated from the rest of the base by a small wooden board.

This fireplace is an excellent example of the ingenuity and ceramic skills of Alphonse Gentil and François Eugène Bourdet. These two architects founded their architectural firm at the beginning of the 20th century and soon became famous in this field. This fireplace was presented at the Salon de l'Art Décoratif organised by the Société des Artistes Français in 1904. Gustave Soulier, author and art historian, particularly highlighted the singular character of the fireplace in the monthly magazine "L'art décoratif : revue de l'art ancien et de la vie artistique moderne" writing that “Mr. Gentil and Mr. Bourdet have made good use of stoneware-ceramics in the two fireplaces they exhibit.” p. 13.

This fireplace is sold without any fireplace insert nor marble floor but could be made to order (please ask for marble availability).

This fireplace can be paired with the fireplace reference 4817.
