Good condition.
Exceptional 18th century fireplace mantel, Regence period, very high quality, representing the coat of arms of the Dauphin of France: first and fourth, azure, three fleurs de lys d'or (which is from France ); and in the second and third, of gold, the dolphin Azure (which is Viennois).
The coat of arms is surmounted by the crown of the Dauphin of France, decorated with dolphins.
It is also girded with the necklace of the Order of Saint Michel, a chilvalry order founded in 1469 by Louis XI: the knights of this order wore "a necklace of gold made [of] shells" to which was suspended a medallion representing the archangel, standing on a rock, slaying the dragon.
"Dauphin" was first the title of the lords of the Dauphiné de Viennois and, from 1349, the title worn by the eldest son of the King of France. It then designates the heir of the crown, until his coronation. The title of Dauphin of France was worn until 1830.
