Antique cast iron fireback dated 1681 representing the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands.
This coat of arms traditionally includes a red crest and a black stripe with three silver crosses supported by two golden lions. It is surmounted by the imperial crown of Austria.
The three crosses of St. Andrew, who was a martyred fisherman on an X-shaped cross in the 1st century AD. This symbol dating from 1505 refers to St. Andrew, the city was at that time a fishing town and all boats sailed under this coat of arms.
