Antique fireback with Hercules columns and laurel branch
Dimensions
Width 32'' ¼ 82cm
Height 26'' ⅜ 67cm
This old Louis XVI style fireback was made in the 19th century. It is decorated with the Columns of Hercules in reference to one of the twelve works of Hercules during which he had to confront the monster Geryon in order to bring back to Eurysthée his cattle. Later, the Columns of Hercules will be the name given to the Strait of Gibraltar, symbolizing what separates the known world from the unknown world. On either side of the two columns, laurel branches, symbols of victory, are placed around a medallion. Their delicacy and naturalism are typical of the Louis XVI style.
