18th century, Paris.

The arms of the Paris City took the form we know in 1358 when King Charles V gave the right to wear the royal arms (fleurs de lys and royal crown). The ship refers to the large corporation "Nautes of Lutetia", shipowners and merchants who sailed the Seine during Antiquity. Usually, this coat of arms is accompanied by the motto of the city, "Fluctuat nec mergitur" which means "It floats but does not sink."
This fireback made in the 18th century presents this scene which is relatively rare on a fireback.
