This extraordinary bed, accompanied by a bench and a pair of chairs, is part of the Egyptomania that culminated in the 19th century. This is evidenced by the canopy, decorated with an Egyptian temple door, the headboard, with the scene of Ramses II on his chariot at the battle of Qadesh reproducing a bas-relief from the great temple of Abu Simbel, the lion-sphinxes adorning the bed frame and the multiple hieroglyphs inspired by ancient sources.
PROVENANCE :
Cabinetmaker Louis Malard presented it at the 1889 World Exhibition, where it won a silver medal and critical acclaim. The bed then belonged to Countess Bathilde Ducos (1851-1927) until its sale, on June 1-2, 1896, to Charles Henri Duquesne, in whose family it remained until its acquisition by Galerie Marc Maison
