Walnut, Japanese panel with lacquered and bone decor from the 19th century.

This exceptional Japanese piece is made up of a central section encased by two openwork uprights forming shelves. The asymmetry is an important element of the construction of this piece and is also an essential characteristic of far-eastern inspired furniture pieces. Thus, there is a discordance between the assumed symmetry of this piece with the central section and shelves placed on both sides ; the actual asymmetry observed in the placement of shelves and dragons. These elements adopt characteristic features of the work of Gabriel Viardot : the flattened head is occupied by a protruding and flattened nose, the lips form slight ripples and reveal sharp teeth. The central section is formed by a Japanese panel with lacquer and bone décor from the 19th century. This element appears probably on a piece originating from the Far East and was reused by Gabriel Viardot for the production of this piece. The décor is characteristic of the decorative Japanese repertoire with the small character chasing a butterfly. The panel is enclosed on its four sides by small, latticed gilded bronze elements decorated in their center with a pinecone. These are, like the scrolled base, elements frequently found in the pieces of Gabriel Viardot. We think the production of this piece was probably made for the Escalier de Cristal, which would explain the absence of the signature of Gabriel Viardot.
