This tiered desk is of very high quality. Its stylistic characteristics connect it, as well as its armchair, to the trend called “Japanism” of the end of the 19th century. Latticed friezes, frightening dragons made in ronde-bosse and the pearl of Tonkin inlays all contribute to this trend. In this respect, this set is typical of the work of Gabriel Viardot whose signature adorns the bottom of one of the desk’s legs. The attention invested in the making of this desk places it among the many luxurious productions that have made the reputation of the Parisian cabinetmaker.
